About Us

The Australian Intercountry Adoption Network (AICAN) is the national network of 13 non-government organisations (NGOs) involved in international adoption. Many of these NGOs have been operating since the mid 1970s, although AICAN was founded in 1990.

Membership is open to Australian NGOs involved in intercountry adoptions and other such individuals or foreign organisations nominated by current members and approved by the membership.

Membership includes:

  • Large groups with extensive experience in establishing Intercountry adoption and children's aid programmes
  • Family support groups

AICAN represents thousands of Australians; people who have been adopted from overseas and their families, and people interested in Intercountry adoption. AICAN develops its policies based on consultation in the network via phone, mail, fax, telephone conferencing, and a Conference held every 2 to 3 years.

AICAN is self-funding. Member organisations pay contributions derived from their individual resources.
